Sin in the original hebrew (khata) literally means “to fail” or “to miss the mark”. In the spiritual context, man has all sinned because we have fallen short of God’s expectations.<\/p>\n

God hates sin because it is the very antithesis of His nature. The psalmist describes God\u2019s hatred of sin this way: \u201cFor You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness; no evil dwells with You\u201d (Psalm 5:4). God hates sin because He is holy; holiness is the most exalted of all His attributes (Isaiah 6:3; Revelation 6:8). His holiness totally saturates His being. His holiness epitomizes His moral perfection and His absolute freedom from blemish of any kind (Psalm 89:35; 92:15; Romans 9:14).<\/p>\n

The Bible has a great deal to say about death and, more importantly, what happens after death. Physical death and spiritual death are both a separation of one thing from another. Physical death is the separation of the soul from the body, and spiritual death is the separation of the soul from God. When understood in that way, the two concepts are very closely related, and both physical death and spiritual death are reflected in the very first references to death.<\/p>\n

John 3:18 explains in the simplest terms who will go to heaven and who will go to hell: \u201cWhoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God\u2019s one and only Son.\u201d So, those who go to hell are specifically those who do not believe in Jesus\u2019 name. To \u201cbelieve\u201d goes beyond a mental recognition of the truth. To believe in Christ for salvation requires a transfer of allegiance. We stop worshiping ourselves, we forsake our sin, and we begin to worship God with our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Matthew 22:36\u201337; Mark 12:30).<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

No one can keep the Law perfectly. The Bible says that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). The Bible also says that the wages of our sin is death (Romans 6:23a). Fortunately, God did not wait until we somehow learned to be \u201cgood\u201d; while we were in our sinful state, Christ died for the unrighteous (Romans 5:8). Salvation is not based on our goodness but on Jesus\u2019 goodness. If we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in our hearts that God raised him from the dead, we will be saved (Romans 10:9). This salvation in Christ is a precious gift, and, like all true gifts, it is unearned (Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8\u20139). The message of the gospel is that we can never be good enough to get to heaven. We must recognize that we are sinners who fall short of God\u2019s glory, and we must obey the command to repent of our sins and place our faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Christ alone was a \u201cgood person\u201d\u2014good enough to earn heaven\u2014and He gives His righteousness to those who believe in His name (Romans 1:17).<\/div>\n
